How Strong Is Strong?

Bee in the moment

Once upon time, there was a little bee who had a lot of energy and was determined to pollinate as many flowers as possible that Spring. He wanted to make the most honey.  The little bee would start early. With a positive mindset, he would look at the sky and fly out with joy. He felt he could do anything that he set his mind to because he had grit, discipline and was willing to work hard.

Soon, he was recognised and celebrated for being the best worker bee who was contributing the most to the honey production and the work in the hive.

But our little bee was ambitious and had big dreams. He wanted to achieve even more.  He gathered the other bees and tried to inspire them to work harder:  “Imagine being the most productive colony this year”.

The other bees were not convinced.  They were tired from all the hard work. They had already made a lot of honey and there was little time left this year. Why not celebrate their tremendous progress and plan for next year?!

The little bee felt disappointed in his colleagues and their lack of ambition. He had worked so very hard this year, harder than all the rest of the bees. He felt it was not fair that they wanted to already celebrate and enjoy the outcome, when they hadn’t invested equal time or effort.

As he ruminated over the events and his options, he concluded that the only way to get what he wants is to take control.  He will work harder! He doesn’t need anyone. It’s not safe to rely on others. Best to count on himself and secure the outcome on his own.

He worked non-stop and did the job of ten bees!  He was invincible and strong. All the bees looked at him in awe; such an inspiration.

The little bee was proud of his achievements. There were times he wished he could take some time off and enjoy the lake. It looked so pretty and all those bees were playing around and having fun. But then he reminded himself he must work harder. He can enjoy his freedom and celebrate later.

As the days went by he started to feel resentment. He was exhausted.  He was feeling down. It took longer in the morning to get himself going. He had to increase his self motivation and self talk.  He didn't find much to smile about.

Although some of the other bees noticed this, they were convinced of the little bee’s strength.  “He will make it. He always does; nothing to worry about”, they said.

Except one sunny beautiful morning, the worker bee didn't fly out.  He was too weak.  He didn't want to do anything at all.  He didn't even want to dream.  He felt totally burnt-out.

The other bees tried to do their best to motivate him, but to no avail.  Poor little bee, he was so strong. What happened? What could he do now? Was there hope?

  • When we over rely on a strength, it can become a weakness.

  • Motivating a team and teamwork in general is usually more effective than going it alone.

  • Dream big, work hard but also take your time to enjoy what you build.

  • Pace yourself.  Life’s work is a marathon. You are in it for the long haul!
